Goodbye, by Alfred Guillou

The Cruel Sea

The Cruel Sea

Your smiling face and wild turbulence
Your rancid depths with your sweet fragrance
Like the swirling mind of a laughing heretic
Your savory sweets are laced with old arsenic

Your deadly depths are graves for lost souls
From the surface they sink down black holes
Mermaids rise and take what they find
Singing fresh lullabies seasoned in brine

Sailors are so lonely, their spirit waits
To be led along through red velvet gates
Down to the bottom to the Devil’s floor
To breathe with the living they will nevermore
The cruel sea with her tender smiles
Found another soul and took it home
