The Abbey in the Oakwood, by Caspar David Friedrich
Robert L. Martin

Money Monster

Behold, a green monster up ahead,
Hiding in caves and in your dreams,
Looking for the right time to come your way,
A wish come true, where affluence lives,
That illusive monster with slippery tentacles,
That grabs a hold, so quick to release,
With a smirk that stretches from ear to ear,
Flaunting its pearly white teeth,
Sporting an emerald satin suit
With diamonds affixed,
Comes your way to recruit you
To join a society founded by the rich.

He brings the crafty connivers to your door.
He conjures up long forgotten relatives.
He turns your “friends” into demons.
He shows you their inner most secrets.
He laughs at you when you
Expose your naivety
And concede to their appeals.
He teaches you their wiles
That you never knew existed in them.
He leaves you alone and penniless
After they drained you
Out of your inheritance.

Money earned through
Hard work and prudence,
The merits of the wise,
Demonstrates the difference
Between the good and evil.
