Sleeping Girl, by Domenico Fetti
Antonio Machado

“One summer night”

One summer night
—the door of my house
and my balcony were open—
death entered her bed,
not even glancing at me
and with such thin fingers
he broke something very fragile.
Silent, without looking at me,
Death passed by again.
What have you done?
Death did not answer.
My young wife remained tranquil,
my heart ached.
Alas, what death has broken
was a thread between us!
