how these shadowed souls lie in wait
black eyes and dark fleshed hearts taste and eat our being,
like mannequins entombed in the glare of a matt finished ogre
silent footsteps over broken glass and our resolve is overturned,
the truism of it all is a smothering dark that holds to entice
a fearful clay that spins a fine wheel to seek new form,
a thread of evil that starves the sunlight from a locked penitent man
to fear no soil, these black eyed souls make faith a perturbed norm,
their innocence holds no burning ember of carbon
a monotone halo breeches the resilient sloth of weariness,
unsure of much in matters where gravity wields prayer
shallow heartbeats and breaths don’t work, they feel your fear,
