Pilgrim

For lost fathers

Where are you going, pilgrim?
To what lands do you roam?
What is it you left behind
A million miles from home?
Why is it that your heart turned black
As your hair turned to grey?
What is the reason that you roam,
And why you went away?
Is it because a love was lost
Or a friend betrayed your trust?
Do you run from some dark memory?
From your own greed and lust?
Did you leave your life behind
Before the break of day?
And will you live in regret of
That life that slipped away?
Where are you going, pilgrim?
Why do you not look back?
Is this why your hair turned grey
And why your heart turned black?
Do you remember seasons past
When you could face the day?
What is the reason, lonely pilgrim
That you went away?
The clues and answers that we seek
Are hidden in your eyes,
For looking deep inside yourself
You will find only lies.
And in your eyes reflections of
A daughter, young and gay
Tell an unjust tale of woe
Of how she went away.
A lock of hair is in your hand,
The other holds a face
Of a photo of a little girl
That you long to embrace.
But she was taken from you
From your arms where she did lay.
Is that the reason, lonely pilgrim,
Why you went away?

(2012)

I wrote this a few days after my ex kidnapped my daughter. I thought it would make me feel happier. It only made me feel better.
