A Place to Lay My Head

To my comfortable wife

I’m tired and I’m weary
And I long to fall asleep,
But I can’t seem to find the key ring
To the paddock of my sheep.
My pillows just won’t stay fluffed;
My bedclothes won’t lay still.
So I must find the replacement
For this need I have to fill.
I might solidify your breath
And then upon it lay my head.
The sweet smells of your body
Will be the comforts of my bed.
I’ll wrap myself up tightly
In the softness of your hair,
The warmth that comes from within you
Will be the clothes I wear.
I’ll have no need for soothing songs:
I’ll just listen to your heart.
The brightness of your eyes
Will be what keeps away the dark.
So let me close my eyes
But let the sheep sleep in their pen.
With you here by my side,
I shan’t have need of them again.

(2014)

I almost called this your body is a slumberland, which gave me far too much entertainment and my wife none at all.
