Every now and then I hear a song about a child
A child escaping a problem
A problem resulting from someone
They didn’t protect, they didn’t keep safe
Their hearts–
Shocked when it broke at the start.
For mama can only fight your battles for so long
And daddy can’t always pay your way
Who are you, poor little princess, to say its your right
Your entitlement yet someone else’s fight
Your win, but their loss
You, their kin, always saved despite the cost
Poor poor poor little princes you are
The reason I hear these songs in my car
These children ignoring their problems
They carry on without a clue
As to how it was solved, I’ll tell you one thing– it wasn’t you
“I’m not mad just disappointed”
The mother of all guilt trips
Doesn’t even work with those kids
Yes it’s just like you and your ways
Giving rhyme and reason to the days
When I hear a song about a child
A child escaping a problem
A problem resulting from someone
They didn’t protect, they didn’t keep safe
Their hearts–
But this time. It’s their fault.
