Matthew Cuthbert

Anne's Lament

Today is your funeral—It is also mine.
You’ve died, you’re gone,
In peace divine..
Your eyes—they cease to shine.

For me, I know not what to do—
You were my greatest guide.
Your death, my life, this endless grief—
What hope, now, can I find?

Your memory is narcissus,
A somber, sick, sweet white.
I left them at your tombstone,
Then sat and cried all night.

Shy smiles in the summertime,
Your silent understanding.
You wanted me to be happy,
Was this in all your planning?

Great puffed-sleeves you purchased
Humbled at the store.
You endured it all for me,
My satiety was yours.

Your vibrant life entwined with mine
What joy can e’er return?
Yet I must stand
Though empty of hand
And live my life, not yearn.

Today is your funeral
And though my tears will flow
I’ll sing, I’ll live
Removed of guilt,
You loved me, you were mine.
