Saturn Devouring His Son, by Francisco de Goya
Robert L. Martin

The Intimidation

Impending danger, my intimidator,
My imaginary self in sole distress,
My fears deep-rooted in me
For what I don’t know,
Are meant for a preservative
For a forthcoming evil.

Sometimes my imaginings
Are my friend,
But mostly my foe indeed.
My battles are waged
Against me and me,
With intimidation triumphant
And me the defeated.

My fear is more painful
To me, the coward,
Then my death would be
To my true courage.
