The Hardening

The Hardening

Infants breathe in the gentle air
In that strange new paradise called life
As it opens its tender arms
And catches them when they fall
And guides them through dark forests

“Little baby, life is another womb
And mother’s tears will keep you afloat
You are an extension of God’s vision
As you sail into the future
With an open heart,
Safe and unguarded,
With love to blow into your sails.”

As the days pile upon each other
Layers mount around tender hearts
The thicker the shell, the harder the spirit
Building presidios with iron gates
As that demon called life
Lurks outside looking in
With its tentacles covered in mud

But after many sunsets closed the day
And the demons became weary
What is left is a tender heart again
As the hardness kept its walls erect
Until the final resting to start
Another new day again
Another hardening of the spirit
Another swimming against the current
Another journey into the
Drama of life
