Tempest, by Ivan Aivazovsky
Robert L. Martin

Laughing Waters

Playground of the devil,
submissive waters from the docile air,
emptied of all emotion and energy,
weakened by the calming skies,
children of the Neptunian Commoners
nestled in the wombs in the
mothers of the sea,
homebodies with no spirit of adventure,
the ideal grounds for the mad tempest
to attack and wreak havoc,

to reach down inside the stillness
of the waters and their passive demeaner,
to light a fire under their feet,
to give them something inside to
fill the void of emotions
and instill in them a devilsh spirit,
a feeling of something other than nothing,
a new life to replace the old.

From the tempest hovering above,
home of the spirit of the devil
comes the perdition of the holy waters,
the stillness made tumultuous,
angelic waters made bestial,
bestial made devilish,
devilish made mischievous
mischievous made playful,
playful made boisterous,
boisterous made corrupt,
corrupt made whimsical,
whimsical not caring about the
state of the waters at the surface,
how the easy motion is disrupted,
laughing when the waves
battle with each other,
when they toss the ships around
and turn the still waters into
a playground of the devil
in obedience to the Lords
of the Netherworld.
