Beacons in the Twilight

Beautiful beacons in the twilight of the day,
shining down in rhythm to the ocean’s sway,

passing down through the cloudy guards
to the mystic surface of the ocean’s yards,

pointing out to where the sun is to drop
with their lights to find one particular spot,

upon one wave that rolls out of range
under the floor of a cloud dressed in orange.

Beautiful gallery on display o’er the sea
hanging 'til day’s end until morning’s reveille,

visions of quiet lightning dancing in the sky
like the taming of the rage to a feeble sigh,

or the rays from the eyes of the skyborne beast
roiling up the waters for its midnight feast,

holding up the clouds with the rays made of steel
and me looking to see and imagine how they feel.

O glorious sunset, thou hast come into view
dressed in thy finest orange o’er ocean’s blue.

Your shining beacons shine down into my heart
as I look to the west and see thy splendid art.
