Naming Conventions

Someone who wants to bestow a name onto something
must typically be its creator or
the one who purchased or discovered it.

The United States has done none of these things
as pertaining to an enormous body of water
named for Mexico several centuries ago.

The current American president
seeks to assume naming privileges
which simply do not apply.

He’ll lose this one thanks to tradition
and the majority of his own nation
that will not feed his vainglorious desires.

Viva la (Golfo de) Mexico!

The idea that a name with centuries of tradition behind it can be changed by presidential fiat is patently absurd, and an affront to the people of both nations and to the world itself.
