Reunions and Such

"You don't choose your family; they are God's gift to you, as you are to them." -
Desmond Tutu
"Family reunions would be great if they weren't crawling with aunts!"
Unknown

It’s always a sad day when I have to leave
But such are the vagaries of life, I guess
If we know not sorrow and do not grieve
We’d never appreciate joy and happiness

Frankly, that’s the sad fact about reunions
A few hours, perhaps days, spent reminiscing
Joyful moments soon followed by sad emotions
When it’s time to bid farewell before leaving

As I get older, I find goodbyes more fitting
‘Till we meet again’ sounds rather optimistic
But then the sadness of farewell is only fleeting
Soon as I recall the laughter and the magic

My life’s a string of sad and happy events
However on balance, my short earthly stay
Overflows with incredibly beautiful moments
Woes, sorrows, yes; but happy ones outweigh

Today as I say goodbye to family and friends
It’s with the fervent hope we’ll meet again
If before then some of us meet our just ends
Happy memories shared will relieve the pain...

I wrote this poem nine years ago after a family reunion.

The photo above is of the Indian Ocean island of Reunion - just a play on words LOL
