Our Backyard

"God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures."
Francis Bacon (1625) Essays ‘Of Gardens'

"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in."
– Greek proverb

Our backyard labor of love
My wife chose all that’s in it
Fruit-bearing trees solar lights
The concrete bench where we sit

Garlic society
Purple blossoms amazing
Honeybees buzzing

Lily of the Nile
Tall upright purple flow’rs too
Damp with morning dew

Fragrant gardenia
Fresh from last evening showers
White perfumed flowers

Under the magnolia tree
White cast-iron garden set
Stone marble nymphs and fairies
Bird bath that blue jays visit

Hardy lantana
Survivor last winter’s freeze
Red and gold posies

Sunshine ligustrum
Apollo’s rays trapped in its
Brilliant golden leaves

Hoary silver dust
Next to the big stone boulder
It’s the eyecatcher

Then there’s begonias
Citronella petunias
Hibiscus hostas
All in perfect harmony
Singing nature’s symphony

I thought I’d write a fun poem for a change!

Above photo is a close-up picture of the purple blossoms of the Lily of the Nile.
