end of night

My New Year 2022 poem which I wrote a few weeks back. Extremely hopeful that we have seen the end of this pandemic. But my hopes shattered with the arrival of the Omicron variant. Nevertheless, I am still hoping (praying really) that soon our nightmare will be over soon.

o’er the still waters faint glimmer of light
done! the reign of darkness, the end of night
dark clouds unraveled to welcome the sun
and farther east brand-new day has begun

the dawn upon us; voiding the shadows
warm golden sunshine illumes the meadows
fresh beginnings, hopes fervent and tender
that from the somber night we can recover

for the night was long cheerless and dreary
torment and anguish made our souls weary
thus, we look forward a new tomorrow
to wipe out all the heartache and sorrow

the gloomy night lasted two years too long
death pestilence and everything that’s wrong
friends loved ones lost, no chance to say goodbye
we mourn and even in our sleep we cry

but with the sunrise perhaps assurance
in our lives there’ll be joy and abundance
pray’rs, we whisper, things return to normal
that our thereafter be phenomenal

hope we can savor the things we used to
visit amazing places old and new
see the smiles of loved ones behind the mask
a touch, a hug, a kiss; what more to ask
thanksgiving feast, brunch come christmas morning
july fourth picnic, new year’s eve singing

twenty-twenty and twenty-twenty one
overjoyed ecstatic they’re both begone
a toast long live to twenty-twenty two
may the new year bring good fortunes anew
our two-year ordeal done, and ends our plight
the shadows are lifted at end of night
