Witch’s Lullaby

They think I wrestle demons in the night.
They think I’m stirring frogs into a brew.
They’ve never seen us picnic in the park.
They’d never believe I made it fine for you.
I brought the milk and cake, it didn’t rain.
I needed no frog’s brains to manage that.
I did it quietly. And you.
You thought I pulled the sunshine from my hat.
Sometimes they ask me for a lover’s charm.
I give them garlic and some words I know.
But if my little babe should come to harm,
If they should say there goes the witch’s brat...
If my little babe should start to cry,
If they should throw their sticks and stones at you...
I’ll call an angry goddess from the sky!
I’ll show the wretches what a witch can do!
