Yes, You Can Kill Me, but You Can’t Kill the Eternal People

Whenever people used to ask
Why bother?
I always had an answer at the ready:
Don’t bother
Because it involves bothering other people
Making a nuisance of yourself
And if you make yourself enough of a nuisance
You will find yourself at the end of a noose

But now when they ask
Why bother?
I answer with a question:
Why not bother?

Because the only way to avoid
Making a nuisance of yourself
Is to take the blame

And if you take the blame
Your hands are tied
Your mouth is gagged
And your eyes are blindfolded
Which is a fate worse than death
Especially since we all die in the end anyway

Now, once you’ve taken the blame
You can’t give it back
Because, of course, no one wants it

But instead of quitting the blame game
And taking my blame home with me
I’ve found a new home
Where they play a game with different rules–
Instead of taking the blame
Now I take responsibility

Apparently, this makes me a bigger nuisance than ever
But just try putting a noose around my neck now–
I dare you

Because I’ve already put my neck on the line
By taking responsibility,
Joining a stiff-necked people
Who put it all on the line every day
In total faith
That God will once again save their collective necks
Just like He always has
And always will
