Only Desire Overcomes Instinct

You may think that the unconscious
Is there to protect you from seeing
How the sausage is made
Because if you knew
You wouldn’t want to eat it

But really the unconscious is there
To protect you from realizing
You are the sausage
And so is your neighbor
Making every act of aggression–
Almost always veiled from you by your unconscious–
Another small bite out of the sausage
i.e. The unconscious is there because
You do want to eat the sausage

In other words
We’re all the natural born killers
Known as cannibals

Unless and until
We wage the fight of our lives
By bringing our murderous instincts into consciousness
Which is the only way we’ll ever know
There is something we desire more than our neighbor’s flesh
(As well as the flesh of our neighbor’s wife)
Because there is nothing we desire more
Than God

Paraphrasing, you might say
The way to a man’s heart
Travels through his stomach
In order to go beyond it
Into the unknown
Where nobody knows how the manna is made
