Holding hands

Sometimes I wonder if I would take it back
Try a little harder or change who I held on to
But the people in the sky laugh at our misfortune
And the hands of time keep turning
With or without you.

Love is like waves
One hour you smile, relief washing over you
Empty promises never needing a response
Sky looking a bit brighter.
The next, the thorns of heartbreak piercing you
A little harder each time you try to escape.
You sit and wonder
Why fate has been so cruel.

Do you know how hard it is
To let go of the light?
The sunshine you kept close to your heart
Surrounded by moths clouding the warmth.

Sometimes I see them.
Two older ghosts of us,
Laughing in the distance,
Holding hands and muttering about what stupid kids we were.

They hold hands forever,
Walking away into the foggy lights
Of a beautiful memory.

Having to say goodbye
