Ink Blotter

The Forgotten

A little boy
tugs at his mothers arm
while she ignores him.
Tears springing to his eyes
he wonders why.

Two little girls huddle together
nestled in the closet, they hide.
Their eyes closed tight
As the footsteps approach.
They make believe there’s hope.

A man strikes his wife.
She lays still on the ground.
Married years.
Nowhere to go.
Four kids to think of first.
She wipes the tears from her eyes.
He screams, “get up!”

A baby cries.
Hungry and upset.
He needs a hug.
He needs some love.
His mother slumps against a grimy wall
As the venom seeps into her veins
She escapes into sleep
While he screams.

A young women
Rides a bus
Her head resting against the seat.
Suffering from sleepless nights.
She needs a job.
Her tears smudge the want Ads
Held in her shaky hands.
As she waits for her next stop.

A young man.
Stands on top of his building roof.
Looking down at the city lights.
He wonders what flying is like.
Looking back one last time
He says goodbye.
As he steps to the edge.
